The Klay Thompson rumor mill is churning, and he keeps getting linked to one team if the Dallas Mavericks ultimately buy him out.

In an appearance on “NBA Today,” ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported that Thompson keeps getting linked to the Miami Heat if the Mavericks ultimately buy out his contract. Thompson is a perfect fit for what the Heat need most, which is depth and shooting ability.

“The name that’s been floated around league circles with him is Miami,” Slater said. “They’re a team that, if he gets into the buyout market, they really need depth and they really need shooting. Despite where he’s at in his career, he hit 202 threes last year. He can still do that, and Miami needs that.”

It remains to be seen what the Mavericks will do with Thompson, though a buyout might be more likely than a trade. He is owed another $17.5 million next season thanks to a contract that functions as little more than a potential salary dump as part of a trade.

Thompson averaged a career-low 11.7 points per game last season, and his 39.3 percent rate from three-point range was also the worst of his NBA career. That is still better than a lot of players, though, and he did make 202 of them, so he can at least provide some volume shooting. The Heat are such an obvious fit for him, and he has been linked to them repeatedly.
