Former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon has announced his retirement.
Brogdon made his announcement on Wednesday, just a week before the start of the regular season.
“Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career,” Brogdon wrote in a statement. “I have proudly given my mind, body and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards. I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends.
“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey.”
Brogdon had signed with the New York Knicks last month and reportedly was set to make their roster. He was on a non-guaranteed contract and was competing with Landry Shamet and Pacome Dadiet for a roster spot, so his decision likely changes things for the Knicks.
Brogdon, who turns 33 in December, was a second-round pick by the Milwaukee Bucks out of Virginia in 2016. He won Rookie of the Year in his debut season with the Bucks and spent three seasons with the team. He was later traded to the Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Washington Wizards. Brogdon won NBA Sixth Man of the Year in the 2022-2023 season when he came off the bench for Boston. He averaged 15.3 points per game during his career.
