Mychal Thompson says son Klay would ‘disown me’ if he acted like LaVar Ball
Mychal Thompson couldn’t be anything like LaVar Ball, because his son would not stand for it.
Thompson, a former Los Angeles Laker and father of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, said Monday he couldn’t imagine acting like the Ball family patriarch. There were several reasons, but chief among them was the fact that Klay would “disown” him.
“Man, if I tried one one-hundredth of what LaVar does, Klay would disown me as a parent,” Thompson told 95.7 The Game’s Mornings W/ Joe, Lo & Dibs. “My wife always asks them, ‘What if your dad was like LaVar?’ They say, ‘Oh, we’d have nothing to do with him.’ So, no. I wouldn’t even try that. That’s not me. I couldn’t do that. I would feel like I’m putting too much pressure on my kid.
“I don’t want that kind of attention. I had my time. My time is long over. It’s Klay’s time and these other now new generation’s time. Let all the attention be on them. They deserve it. Not me.”
The latest episode of the Ball saga involves private meetings with team executives about repeated public criticism. To each their own, but you can see why Thompson can’t imagine going that route.
