Report: NBA pushes for gambling change after Jontay Porter scandal

The NBA has successfully pushed for a significant change to gambling rules that appears to be trying to prevent a repeat of the scandal that got Jontay Porter banned from the league last season, according to a report.

The NBA has asked leading sportsbooks not to offer under prop bets on players who are on two-way or 10-day contracts, according to David Payne Purdum of ESPN. DraftKings and FanDuel are among the sportsbooks that have agreed to comply.

The NBA, after discussions with sportsbooks, has requested that under bets on players who are on two-way or 10-day contracts not be offered, multiple sources tell ESPN.

This appears to be a direct response to what happened involving Porter, a former Toronto Raptor who was banned from the NBA for life in April after an investigation found that he tipped off bettors to confidential health information. That led to heavy action on Porter’s under props in two separate games, and those bets won.

In addition to his lifetime ban, Porter is facing felony charges for his role in the scheme.

The NBA’s new plan does not completely eliminate the risk of another player getting involved in something like this. However, this will make schemes like Porter’s much less feasible in the future.
