One former NBA player is trading in his basketball shorts for boxing shorts.
Uprising Promotions announced on Monday that ex-NBA guard Michael Carter-Williams is set to make his amateur boxing debut late next month. He will be fighting on May 29 in New York City as part of an event called “Broad Street Brawl.”
Now 33 years old, Carter-Williams was the No. 11 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft out of Syracuse University. He spent his first two career seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, winning NBA Rookie of the Year in 2014 and also putting together one of the most memorable career debut games in league history (with 22 points, seven rebounds, 12 assists, and nine steals against the Big Three-era Miami Heat).
Carter-Williams also later went on to play for the Milwaukee Bucks, the Chicago Bulls, the Charlotte Hornets, the Houston Rockets, and the Orlando Magic. He was last in the league during the 2022-23 season with Orlando and finished with career averages of 10.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.
After a brief stint in 2023-24 with the Mexico City Capitanes in the NBA G League, Carter-Williams decided to retire. He had hinted in previous years at a potential move into a different area within combat sports but has now apparently decided on boxing.
While Carter-Williams’ opponent still has yet to be announced, he possesses good size at a playing career listing of 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds. Hopefully, Carter-Williams’ dip into boxing goes better than the one that another former NBA guard had in the past.
