Russell Westbrook: Kevin Durant and I will always have each other’s backs
If you’re searching for the greatest love story of our time, look no further than the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Thunder guard Russell Westbrook clearly appreciated teammate Kevin Durant going out of his way to rebuke comments made by Mavericks owner Mark Cuban suggesting that Westbrook is not a “superstar.”
Westbrook was asked on Wednesday about what it meant for Durant, who called Cuban “an idiot” in their postgame press conference after the Thunder’s series-ending victory over Dallas in Game 5 on Monday, to spring to his defense so ardently.
“It was very important [to me],” said Westbrook per Royce Young of ESPN. “Me and Kevin’s relationship is great. He’s like my brother. We talk about different things, not just basketball-related. He’s always gonna have my back and I’ll always have his.”
For Westbrook and Durant, who have played together since Westbrook’s rookie season in 2008, the brotherhood runs deep. Despite all the (now-antiquated) talk about how the duo can’t co-exist on the court, there’s no denying their closeness off it.
With Durant set to become a free agent this summer, one popular theory suggests that he might re-sign with the Thunder on a one-year deal so that both he and Westbrook hit the open market at the same time in 2017. Now it’s starting to look like the power of the bromance alone could make that a very likely possibility.
