Victor Wembanyama explains why he went on monk retreat in China

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was recently spotted on a rather unconventional trip to China, and offered some details about why he made the trek on Saturday.

Wembanyama was a guest on a live episode of “The Shop” at Fanatics Fest on Saturday, and was naturally asked about his unusual trip to embed himself with a group of Shaolin monks in China. Wembanyama said he made the trip to benefit his body and put it through things it had not faced before.

“It was a great experience,” Wembanyama said, via Larry Holder of The Athletic. “My goal going there was putting my body through things that it’s not used to doing and allowing my range of movement and strength. This was probably as very different as possible from what I’m used to doing.

“Kung fu. Everyday. It was like a vegan temple, monastery. … I was isolated.”

Wembanyama added he had to occasionally sneak out to eat some meat to maintain his weight of 245 pounds, but that the trip was “worth it.”

Wembanyama did make some drastic, albeit temporary changes while on the trip and checking out the sights. The Spurs center seemed to take a lot out of it, and maybe there are even some physical lessons he could apply to his NBA career, perhaps even knocking LeBron James out of the league.

The French center had outstanding season last year to the tune of 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game. However, he was limited to just 46 games when a blood clot in his shoulder prematurely ended his year in February. He is expected to be ready for the start of next season.
