Andre Ward, Sergey Kovalev ‘of course’ want rematch
Andre Ward was awarded a unanimous decision victory over Sergey Kovalev in a controversial decision from the judges scoring the fight between the two at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Though Kovalev scored a knockdown early and looked to be dominating the fight especially in the early rounds, all three judges scored the fight 114-113. That means they gave seven rounds to Ward and only five to Kovalev, despite the Russian’s one 10-8 round and early dominance.
The controversial decision led to people instantly wondering whether there would be a rematch. Both fighters said they wanted one.
“Of course,” Ward said when asked by HBO’s Max Kellerman about whether he would fight Kovalev again. “I’m not going to negotiate a fight right now … we’ll see what’s next.”
Kovalev also answered “of course” when asked about a rematch, though he made noise about possibly not wanting to fight in Las Vegas again where he might have felt the crowd and judges were biased towards Ward.
