Kell Brook suffered eye injury, explains towel decision

Kell Brook may have been slightly disappointed that he didn’t get to finish his fight against GGG on Saturday in London on his terms, but he knows his eye injury is a big reason why his corner threw in the towel.

Gennady Golovkin was awarded a 5th-round TKO victory after Brook’s corner threw in the towel while watching their fighter get hit hard in the round. Brook did not appear to be out of the fight by any stretch, but he said after the bout that he had told his corner about a bad eye injury he was fighting.

“Yeah, you know a few rounds before that, I told them my eye had gone,” Brook told HBO’s Jim Lampley after the fight. “I think GGG could see me. I could see like three or four of him out of my right eye. (My left eye) was OK but it was hard to see him.”

He was then asked what he thought of his corner’s decision to stop the fight.

“I’m very frustrated. I had so much more to give and I believe I would have took over the middle to the last part of the fight.

“With this magnitude of a fight, it should have carried on. Me as a fighter as a warrior, I want to carry on. (Make him) knock me out.”

Even though Brook was disappointed, it seems the decision to call it was done to protect him. In fact, Brook had to go to the hospital after the fight to have his eye examined.
