
San Diego State pulled off an upset in the College World Series on Friday night when first baseman Steven Pallares stole home plate to give the Aztecs a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning. They went on to defeat UC Santa Barbara — the No. 1 seed in the Lake Elsinore Regional and No. 13 overall seed in the tournament.
It was an outright steal, with Pallares getting a fantastic jump and simply beating the throw and tag. You can see a video of the play below:

And if there was any doubt as to who the MVP of the game was, Pallares also homered earlier in the night. He finished 3-for-3 and scored three of San Diego State’s four runs.
We saw Florida pull off a steal of home plate earlier this season, but that was on a well-executed trick play. Pallares beat his opponents with straight speed. You have to respect that.
