Alabama prepared to throw big money at Gregg Marshall

Gregg MarshallAlabama has not been a consistent factor in college basketball for about 10 years, and they would like to change that. They are looking for a new coach and think Gregg Marshall is the guy who can turn around the program.

The Crimson Tide, which fired Anthony Grant after six seasons on the job, have their sights set on Marshall and are prepared to throw big money at him, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish reports.

Parrish says Bama is prepared to offer Marshall $3 million per season to try to lure him away from Wichita State after the Shockers’ season ends.

Alabama saw rival Auburn hire Bruce Pearl and advance to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament, and they don’t want to fall behind.

The big question is whether Marshall would accept/leave Wichita State. He has already turned down offers from programs like Tennessee and Cal, so Bama might not entice him. He also knows he can build a winner at Wichita State — he has led them to the Final Four, a perfect regular season, and this year the Sweet 16.

Not only does Auburn appear to be on the upswing, but Mississippi State is hiring Ben Howland. The conference and division is about to get tougher.
