LSU head coach Kim Mulkey made waves on Sunday for her interesting exchange with a reporter after her team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
Mulkey’s LSU Tigers lost to the UCLA Bruins in their Elite Eight matchup at Spokane Arena in Spokane, Wash. LSU trailed by double figures in the fourth quarter before battling back to cut the deficit to three with 3:24 to play. But UCLA closed the game out with stellar free throw shooting down the stretch.
The 62-year-old coach was her usual expressive self during LSU’s postgame press conference. When a reporter started off his question by stating the obvious, Mulkey took the opportunity to roast him.

Reporter: “Coach, it’s the second straight year you guys were eliminated in the Elite Eight.”
Mulkey: “That’s terrible isn’t it? Is that terrible or is that good?”
Reporter: “Terrible.”
Mulkey: “Is it? How many Final Fours have you played in?”
Reporter: “None.”
Mulkey: “So it’s probably pretty good, huh?”
“How many Final Fours did you play in?”

Making the Elite Eight in back-to-back seasons is undeniably a terrific outcome for even the best basketball programs in the country. Mulkey may simply be a victim of her own success.
Mulkey led LSU to a national championship two seasons ago in just her second year with the program. When you set the standard that high, it’s arguably a compliment when a reporter labels your Elite Eight exit as “terrible.”
The reporter shouldn’t feel too bad either, given that Mulkey’s own coaching staff isn’t spared from her fits of rage.
