Muffet McGraw steps down as head coach at Notre Dame

One of the most legendary coaches in women’s college basketball history is walking away from the sport, as Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw announced on Wednesday that she has decided to retire.

McGraw revealed in a statement on social media that she is calling it a career two years after she led Notre Dame to a national championship. The 64-year-old said she is proud of what she accomplished in 33 seasons with the Irish and can now “turn the page to the next chapter in my life with no regrets.”

Notre Dame had a down year this season, finishing 13-18 before the season was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Still, the news came as a shock to many.

McGraw finishes with a record of 848–251 at Notre Dame. She led the Irish to nine Final Four appearances and won two national titles. She was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.
