College Football Playoff director suggests ‘Star Wars’ led to low ratings
The ratings for the College Football Playoff semifinal games were a major disappointment. Apparently we can thank Luke Skywalker for that.
On Friday, CFP executive director Bill Hancock spoke about the ratings being down significantly from the first ever playoff tournament. While most people blame poor scheduling because the games were held on New Year’s Eve, Hancock joked that the release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” had something to do with it.
Bill Hancock: Someone suggested to me Star Wars was a factor (in TV ratings).

No, Bill Hancock doesn’t seriously believe Star Wars was defining, essential factor in low ratings. His point was – there are many factors.

While it might sound crazy, it probably didn’t help. Heck, just look at the way Ronda Rousey got dressed up for the show and finally got herself out of the house to do something fun.
Hancock said the schedule will not be changing for next year because the committee doesn’t want to make “knee-jerk” reactions. The blowout between Alabama and Michigan State probably didn’t help ratings, but I can’t imagine they’ll be a lot higher next year. People do party on New Year’s Eve, whether Hancock is willing to admit it or not.
