Jon Gruden once aspired to coach Michigan
Jon Gruden is the biggest name linked to every NFL head coaching vacancy whenever one becomes available, but what about college? Would Gruden ever leave his job with ESPN’s Monday Night Football to coach at the collegiate level? If it were 1984, he wouldn’t even think twice about it.
A student from the University of Dayton — where Gruden went to college and was a quarterback — recently uncovered a copy of the school’s 1984 football media guide that included Gruden. Here’s what the blurb under the then-backup quarterback’s name said.
The versatile quarterback will back up Phil Nussman this season…His father, Jim, is the Director of Player Personnel for the Tampa Bay Bucs and one of his favorite players, Jack Thompson, is Jon’s favorite athlete…Once captain of South Bend High School, Gruden carries a 3.25 GPA in public relations…After graduation he would like to become the head coach of the University of Michigan.
Sound the alarm! We’ve had it all wrong, folks. Gruden isn’t thinking about a certain NFL job out west because he knows Brady Hoke is on the hot seat in Ann Arbor, right?
Probably not. Have your aspirations changed a bit since college? I’m sure the answer for most of you is yes. The fact that Gruden wanted to coach Michigan 30 years ago means very little. But if Michigan fans want to dream of Chucky patrolling their sidelines, who are we to stop them?
