Steve Spurrier on retirement decision: ‘I sort of fired myself’

Steve Spurrier

Steve Spurrier’s surprise announcement on Monday that he was resigning as head football coach of South Carolina came as a shock to many. Some might see the 70-year-old’s decision as a peaceful ride off into the sunset to enjoy his golden years. Unfortunately, Spurrier is not one of those people, revealing in an exclusive sitdown with Josh Kendall of The State on Wednesday a much more blunt thought process behind his retirement.

Steve Spurrier: "I sort of fired myself. That’s one way to look at it. I don’t think I’ve done a very good job this year. I really don’t."

— Josh Kendall (@JoshatTheState) October 14, 2015

Good ol’ Coach Spur. Keeping it real until the very end.

Spurrier has already blessed us with an excess of classic quotes over the years, and with the Gamecocks sporting a 9-10 record thus far over their last two seasons, Spurrier’s critical assessment of his own job performance might not be that far from the truth at all.

The college football world will definitely miss Spurrier’s honesty, accountability, and unmatched personality now that the legendary coach has fired himself into retirement.
