Former Boston College baseball star Pete Frates helped raise millions of dollars for ALS research between the time he was diagnosed with the disease in 2012 up until it took his life last week, and Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien is among those who are committed to making sure it continues.
Frates was the inspiration behind the popular “Ice Bucket Challenge” in 2014, which involved people dumping buckets of ice water on their head and nominating friends and family to do the same in order to raise money and awareness for ALS. It became a viral sensation in 2014 and helped raise millions of dollars for ALS research. O’Brien, a fellow Massachusetts native who attended the same high school as Frates, has decided to bring back the challenge.

The Ice Bucket Challenge was a massive success five years ago, so hopefully O’Brien is successful in his attempt to bring it back.
Frates was only 34. The way the sports world paid tribute to him proves what a huge impact he had on the lives of so many.
