Report: Blaine Gabbert in danger of losing starting job to Colin Kaepernick
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert is reportedly in danger of losing his starting job after his awful performance in Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, the 49ers are considering making a change in the wake of Gabbert posting a passer rating of 58.4 over the past two games. Cole also notes that Gabbert and the San Francisco offense started out an abysmal 0-for-8 on third downs against Seattle.
“Chip Kelly has expressed concern over Colin Kaepernick’s conditioning, but sources say a change may be coming,” Cole said.
Gabbert has thrown three interceptions over the past two weeks. In fairness, he did face two tough defenses on the road in Carolina and Seattle, but he certainly has not shown he is up to the challenge.
Making matters more interesting, Kelly implied on Monday that Kaepernick is currently the 49ers’ No. 2 quarterback because he is not fully healthy. Does that mean Kaepernick has a chance to take over when he’s up to speed, or is that simply Kelly’s way of sugarcoating things for his backup?
Even one notable opponent questioned why Gabbert is starting over Kaepernick. It could only be a matter of time before Kelly’s hand is forced.
