Cam Newton does not sound like he wants to leave Panthers
There is increasing speculation that Cam Newton’s days with the Carolina Panthers are numbered, but that may not be the way the quarterback wants it.
Newton said Tuesday that Charlotte is “home” to him, citing the fans knowing who he is and his comfort level there.
“Charlotte is home,” Newton said, via Bill Voth of the team’s official website. “Charlotte is a place that I know that people know me, not just assuming how I am. They know my energy. They know what I like, they know what I don’t like. For me to have that type of presence just gratifies or reminds you that it’s right.”
Ultimately, it’s a decision that isn’t really up to Newton. The quarterback is due $18.6 million next year and hasn’t been elite since 2015. He’s missed the bulk of 2019 with a Lisfranc injury, and Kyle Allen is a cheaper option going forward. All these factors combined suggest that Newton may be on his way out, though it sounds like that would happen against his wishes.
