The Arizona Cardinals have had an ongoing problem during preseason trying to figure out the proper way to fake a pre-snap clap.
After quarterback Kyler Murray took two false starts in the second preseason game, backup Brett Hundley ran into the problem again on Saturday. It’s clear that the team was feeling a lack of clarity on the rule, and Hundley said an explanation from an official had only made him even more confused.
Hundley said official told him he was called for false start because his hands weren't in front of him when he clapped. Hundley: "It's really weird because when you clap your hands aren’t in front. They’re naturally outside of you. I'm so confused."

You can’t blame Hundley and the Cardinals for being frustrated. There’s very little consistency to how the false start calls have been applied, and coach Kliff Kingsbury didn’t hide his frustration when asked about it. It’s a subplot worth watching for the team once the regular season starts, as the fake claps seem to be a calculated part of Kingsbury’s offense.
