Report: Notable NFC team will not pursue Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick is expected to draw plenty of interest now that he has parted ways with the New England Patriots, but there is at least one team that does not plan to reach out to the legendary head coach.

The Washington Commanders do not have Belichick on their list of head coach candidates, according to multiple reports.

Checked in yet again and sources I've spoken to have reaffirmed the Commanders are not expected to pursue Bill Belichick

As Josh Harris and the Commanders search team continue to work on the new operation, source tells me that Bill Belichick now truly available doesn’t change things. He’s not expected to be in Commanders plans.

Belichick wants to keep coaching, which is not a surprise. He is just 15 wins shy of breaking Don Shula’s record for most combined regular-season and playoff victories as an NFL head coach. One big question for teams will be how much control Belichick wants over personnel decisions, as the 71-year-old did a poor job with New England’s roster after Tom Brady left in 2019.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said over the weekend that new Commanders owner Josh Harris is “enamored” with the idea of Belichick coaching the team. If that is true, it does not sound like the sentiment is shared throughout the organization.

With seven open head coach jobs outside of New England, it would be a surprise if Belichick had a difficult time finding a landing spot. He may even wait to see if any current playoff teams wind up making a change, though one report linked Belichick to an NFC team immediately after news surfaced that he is out in New England.
