Pat Mahomes Sr. and fellow former MLB pitcher John Rocker were supposed to square off in a celebrity boxing match later this year, but that fight is no longer happening.
Mahomes, who is the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, got into a heated verbal altercation with Rocker at the Super Bowl in New Orleans earlier this month. The two had to be separated after they got into it on Bourbon Street, or so it appeared. You can watch the clip here.
Mahomes later admitted that the incident was staged. The 54-year-old is on probation for his past arrests for driving while under the influence, and he missed a urine test on Feb. 11 while he was in New Orleans. During a court hearing related to the missed test, Mahomes admitted that his dust-up with Rocker was “a staged altercation to get publicity for [a] celebrity boxing match that was set to take place in April 2025.”
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy later confirmed that Mahomes and Rocker were scheduled to fight at “Rough ‘N Rowdy,” which is Barstool Sports’ fight promotion, on April 19.
Portnoy now says that fight has been canceled. During Friday’s edition of “The Unnamed Show,” Portnoy revealed that Patrick Mahomes and the quarterback’s wife Brittany Mahomes put a stop to the event.
“They came to us with this,” Portnoy said. “How would we ever come up with this concept? Like, ‘Oh, let’s put John Rocker vs. Pat Mahomes Sr.’ Who would ever think of that? They came to us, said they hate each other and wanted to fight. … Mahomes’ agent, the football player, and Brittany, from what I am told, intervened and were like, ‘There’s no way this fight’s happening. We’re gonna cut this guy off if he does it.’ So, they canceled.”
Mahomes Sr. pitched 11 seasons in MLB from 1992-2003. He was primarily a relief pitcher and went 42-39 with a 5.47 ERA during his career.
Mahomes Sr. has pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence three times. The most recent arrest came days before the Super Bowl last year and led to a jail sentence.
It is not hard to believe that Patrick and Brittany Mahomes would want Pat to avoid the spotlight as much as possible.
