Jalen Hurts’ old remarks about Eagles OC Kevin Patullo resurface

Jalen Hurts seemed frustrated with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo during Sunday’s game, and that has led to some notable old comments from the quarterback resurfacing.

Hurts had an animated conversation with Patullo on the sideline late in the third quarter of the Eagles’ 33-26 Week 3 win over the Rams at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The exchange, which you can see here, came after Hurts threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown.

When asked what he said to Patullo, Hurts had a cryptic response. The Super Bowl MVP said he only cares about winning even if that means “getting out of character” in a certain situation.

Some have speculated that Hurts never wanted Patullo to be promoted to offensive coordinator. Days after the Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX back in February, Hurts spoke about the possibility of Patullo being promoted from pass game coordinator to OC. He did not exactly give the 44-year-old a ringing endorsement.

“Kevin Patullo’s never been a … he’d have a different role. It’s hard to compare that role to this role, because his job is gonna demand something totally different of him,” Hurts said. “I have a lot of confidence in him and what he’s shown. However, I know over the years I’ve learned that’s out of my jurisdiction. So, I’m kind of just taking things as they come and trying to go out there and be the best I can be and just learn and evolve.”

Kellen Moore was Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator last season, but he left to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. It is possible that Hurts wanted the Eagles to bring in a more experienced outside candidate to replace Patullo. If Hurts was excited about Patullo taking over as offensive coordinator, he did not do much to show it.

Hurts threw for 152 yards with no touchdowns in the Eagles’ 24-20 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. He had just 101 passing yards and no touchdowns when the Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2. Hurts and Philadelphia’s passing offense finally came alive on Sunday, when the quarterback went 21/32 for 226 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Most of that production came in the second half.

Even Brown has taken a swipe at his own team’s offense, so it seems like there has been at least some frustration from players toward Patullo early in the year.
