Jameis Winston has ‘no baseball’ clause in his Bucs contract

Jameis-Winston-crab-legs

Jameis Winston isn’t exactly Bo Jackson, but the former Florida State star is damn good at both football and baseball. So good, in fact, that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to protect themselves in writing in case Winston decides football is not the sport for him.

Peter King of The MMQB reports that Winston’s contract with the Bucs contains a clause that prohibits him from playing professional baseball during the life of the deal.

Back in February, Winston was noncommittal when King asked him if he would ever consider playing professional baseball.

“I can’t speak on that,” he said. “It has always been my dream, but I’m just playing football right now.”

That conversation was apparently alarming for Tampa general manager Jason Licht, who later texted Winston and informed him that the Bucs would not support their quarterback pursuing a two-sport career if they drafted him. Winston obviously wasn’t bothered by that.

For the sake of reference, here are some of Winston’s stats from when he pitched for the Seminoles.

As you can see, he’s more than just an average ballplayer. Heck, Jameis even found himself involved in a bench-clearing brawl with his team at one point, though he was quickly removed from the fold.

For now, football should be the only thing on Winston’s mind. His contract is a reminder of that.
