Report: Jason Garrett not expected to remain with Cowboys

Jason Garrett

The Dallas Cowboys’ handling of Jason Garrett has left many wondering this week what is going on. We may finally have some clarity on the matter.

Garrett’s contract with the Cowboys is expiring, and he was widely expected to be replaced as head coach. Strangely, four days after the Cowboys’ season came to an end, there was no word on whether Garrett had been replaced. The lack of an announcement on the matter left some to wonder whether Garrett would remain with the team in some capacity in 2020.

Instead, ESPN’s Ed Werder now reports that the Cowboys are expected to move on without Garrett and soon begin interviewing possible head coach candidates. Werder says the time and care in the handling of Garrett’s situation has been out of respect to the team’s longtime head coach, who has deep ties to the organization.

This makes some sense.

While Dallas missed out on Ron Rivera, there is not much downside to them taking extra time with their care of Garrett before proceeding with a coaching search. They still will be able to interview most candidates available. Plus, their handling of Garrett this week may reflect well on them in the eyes of possible candidates.
