It took a week longer than most expected, but Jason Garrett has finally been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys informed Garrett on Sunday that they will not be renewing his contract, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports first reported.

Garrett and the Cowboys met several times over the past week. There was some speculation that Jerry Jones would decide to keep Garrett around, however, Dallas has already shown interest in potential replacements like Mike McCarthy and Marvin Lewis.
Glazer reported earlier on Sunday that Garrett had been lobbying to keep his job, which was one of the reasons it took the Cowboys so long to formally part ways with the coach. Garrett has a close relationship with the Jones family, so they may have been giving him the courtesy of hearing him out.
There had been some talk that Garrett could remain with the Cowboys in a new role in 2020, but it does not sound like that is going to happen.
