Joe Montana not yet ready to crown Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo was fantastic in his limited time with the San Francisco 49ers last season. He was so good that his performance convinced the team to sign him to a massive five-year, $137.5 million extension over the offseason. Despite that, 49ers franchise legend Joe Montana is not ready to crown him yet.

“I think it’s still a little early for it, myself,” Montana said on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” Tuesday. “He’s obviously has a lot more success in the games he’s played in so far than the other quarterbacks that have been there recently. So I think there’s a lot of excitement in the Bay Area about it. They paid a lot of money for him … I think there’s some belief there that he’ll be there for a while.”

Garoppolo went 5-0 in his starts with the Niners last season, who finished 6-10. He completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 1,560 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions. He certainly turned the team around and looked great last year. If he keeps playing that way, he will definitely prove himself as a franchise quarterback for San Francisco.
