NFL makes decision after Vikings kicker appeals to have his perfect season reinstated

Vikings kicker Will Reichard's field goal attempt going wide right after appearing to hit the SkyCam wire

Minnesota Vikings kicker Will Reichard saw his perfect kicking season spoiled by a SkyCam wire. However, the NFL has no plans of righting the wrong.

Reichard entered the Vikings’ Week 5 game against the Cleveland Browns with a perfect 8-for-8 record on field goal attempts. His first official miss of the 2025 campaign occurred with about 10 minutes to play in the NFL London Games matchup at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England.

With the Vikings trailing the Browns 17-14, Reichard’s 51-yard kick veered wide right of the goal posts. Slow-motion replays later showed the ball appearing to be deflected by the SkyCam wire.

Both Will Reichard’s agents and the Vikings’ front office later appealed to have the missed field goal removed from the box score. According to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, “acknowledged” that the referees missed the call but “will not make the statistical adjustment.”

The NFL’s ruling is hardly a surprise. If the league amended the box score due to a missed call like that, it may set a precedent for players to request the same for various other botched calls just to tidy up some box score numbers. The league likely felt like the hassle would not be worth it, especially given that the Vikings still won the game anyways, 21-17.

With the Vikings having a bye for Week 6, Reichard will have to sit on his tragic missed field goal for a little bit longer.
