The injuries suffered by an NFL sideline worker in Sunday’s New Orleans Saints-Detroit Lions game ended up being just as bad as they looked.
Saints beat writer Mike Triplett reports this week that Nick Piazza, the chain crew member involved in a collision with Saints running back Alvin Kamara, suffered a dislocated knee as well as a fractured fibula on the play. Piazza is expected to undergo surgery next week, but the good news is that his blood vessels remain intact.
Kamara collided with Piazza after being forced out of bounds on a 3rd-and-3 run play in the second quarter of the Saints’ eventual 33-28 loss. The game was briefly delayed as Piazza was tended to by medical staff, who placed an air cast on his leg and carted him off the field into an ambulance.
Piazza’s leg was seen bending the wrong way, so unfortunately, the extent of his injuries is not surprising. With surgery now impending, hopefully he has a speedy recovery.
