Several NFL teams had their official Twitter accounts hacked on Sunday and Monday, and the league has confirmed that the issue is being addressed.
After nearly half of the NFL’s teams and the league itself had their official Twitter accounts breached, the NFL issued a statement on Tuesday saying immediate action was taken and all the accounts have been secured.
“On Monday, the NFL cybersecurity department became aware of a breach of a league-related social media account,” the statement read, per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. “Targeted breaches and additional failed attempts were discovered across the league and team accounts. The NFL took immediate action and directed the teams to secure their social media accounts and prevent further unauthorized access.
“Simultaneously, the league alerted the social media platform providers and, with their assistance, secured all league and club accounts. We continue to work diligently with the teams, which have resumed normal operations.”
The Chicago Bears were the first to have their Twitter account hacked, and fans were left scratching their heads on Sunday morning over a tweet that said the team had been sold. Similar messages appeared on the accounts of other teams, with a company called OurMine bragging about how “everything is hackable.”
In reality, the hacking could have been worse. Most of what was written was more bizarre than anything. The hackers could have caused a lot more problems if they wanted to.
