Did anyone really think Patriots executive Nick Caserio was going to leave New England to take the Miami Dolphins GM job? Probably not, but it sounds like we know why he entertained the notion of joining his AFC East rival.
Multiple reports on Saturday indicated that the Dolphins offered Caserio their GM job. Caserio, who has been the Patriots’ director of pro personnel since 2008, reportedly turned down the job. It sounds like he interviewed with them for some leverage.
Miami Herald Dolphins reporter Adam Beasley indicated that Caserio was trying to use the interview to get a raise from the Pats:
Person in the know I just got off the phone with told me Caserio was underpaid by the Patriots — and presumably just got himself a raise.

NFL Network reporter and former Boston Globe Patriots reporter Albert Breer adds that the Patriots never thought Caserio was leaving:
Patriots never believed Nick Caserio was leaving, short of a monumental financial offer. Question now is if he got a VP title or a raise.

Even if he didn’t get a raise from the Pats, it’s probably a good career move not to take a front office position with the Dolphins. That’s a hard franchise to turn around.
