Packers face major decision on Matt LaFleur

The Green Bay Packers’ collapse in Chicago on Saturday night could wind up costing Matt LaFleur his job.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on “Sunday NFL Countdown” that the Packers have a major decision to make on LaFleur’s future. LaFleur has one year remaining on his contract, and Packers president Ed Policy will essentially have to decide if the team wants to give LaFleur a contract extension or move on from him.

Schefter also noted that the Packers could be a very appealing landing spot for John Harbaugh should the job become available. Similarly, LaFleur would be a highly-regarded candidate for other jobs if the Packers did choose to move on from him.

LaFleur was criticized in many circles Saturday for what was perceived as a conservative gameplan in the second half of the Packers’ 31-27 loss to the Chicago Bears in the NFC Wild Card round. Green Bay had to punt on each of its first four possessions in the second half, with three of the four possessions ending in a three-and-out. That bought Chicago’s offense time to claw back into the game and remain within striking distance.

LaFleur has made the playoffs in six of his seven seasons as Packers head coach, and has a regular season record of 76-40-1. However, he is just 3-6 in the playoffs, and has failed to get past the divisional round in each of his last four postseason appearances.

This is not the first time LaFleur has been questioned for his offensive gameplan this season. The Packers expect to be chasing Super Bowl titles, especially on the heels of good regular seasons. The fact that they have not been able to do that in recent years might spell the end of LaFleur’s time with the franchise.
