Patriots not expected to pursue Trent Williams trade

Trent Williams

The New England Patriots are one of the teams that have been viewed as a logical fit for Trent Williams if the Washington Redskins decide to trade the Pro Bowler, but it does not sound like Bill Belichick is interested.

Isaiah Wynn, one of New England’s two first-round picks last year, is working his way back from a torn Achilles. He increased his workload this week and appears to be on track to start in Week 1, likely at left tackle. Because of that, ESPN’s Field Yates does not expect the Patriots to inquire about Williams.

Wynn is essentially a rookie, so there was some thought that the Patriots could move him to another spot on the line and make a run Williams. However, Williams carries salary cap hits of more than $14 million in each of the next two seasons, and it would obviously make much more sense financially for the Patriots to give Wynn a chance to prove he is capable of protecting Tom Brady’s blindside.

Washington is supposedly hesitant to trade Williams despite the issues the seven-time Pro Bowler is having with the team’s medical staff. They’re seeking at least a first-round pick, which is almost certainly too steep of a price for the Patriots and most other teams.
