Trent Williams not expected at training camp amid feud with Redskins’ doctors
Trent Williams has not taken part in offseason activities with the Washington Redskins after he had a medical scare and was reportedly unhappy with the way the team handled it, and that theme will continue when training camp begins on Wednesday.
According to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Williams is not expected at training camp and it could be “quite a while” before he returns — if he returns at all. Part of that may have to do with him not being cleared medically, but it sounds like he is still at odds with Washington’s medical staff.
A major storyline to watch for the #Redskins. Dissatisfaction with their handling of his medical situation and his desire for a new contract are among the reasons for one of the top players at his position. https://t.co/BgxCwHNLLF

When discussing with @MikeGarafolo the expectation that #Redskins LT Trent Williams holds out, it was also important to note that Williams must be cleared to play. And considering the seriousness of his medical scare (with subsequent scalp surgeries), that is not a given.

Williams, 30, underwent testing earlier this offseason when a growth was found on his head. There were initially fears that the mass could be malignant, but he got good news from doctors. However, the situation has led to a disagreement between Williams and the team, and it is one that apparently has not been resolved. A report last month claimed Williams wants to be either traded or released.
There has been talk that the issues Williams is having with Washington are part of a larger problem between players and the team’s medical staff, but head coach Jay Gruden recently tried to downplay that. Williams is under contract with the team for two more years and has made the Pro Bowl every season since 2012. With an uncertain quarterback situation heading into the year, Washington needs him more than ever.
