Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson had an interesting reason for the team’s poor defense this season.
According to Grigson, the Colts’ defense – which currently sits 30th in points per game allowed – is bad because they are still trying to gather good players. Why? Because quarterback Andrew Luck just got an enormous new contract.
Grigson: "When you pay Andrew (Luck) what we did, it’s going to take some time to build on the other side of the ball."

Of course, this doesn’t explain why the Colts didn’t try to put a quality defense in place during the years Luck was on a below-market deal. At no point have they had a really good defense with Luck on the roster, so this just sounds like an excuse for mediocrity. Perhaps Reggie Wayne was onto something with his recent comments.
