Report: At least six teams considered Baker Mayfield top QB in draft
The Cleveland Browns surprised some by taking Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall, but it sounds like they were far from the only franchise to consider him the best quarterback in the draft.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com spoke to 12 NFL teams, and four of them confirmed that they had Mayfield as the No. 1 quarterback on their draft board. Two others strongly implied that he was, meaning the Browns were not alone in their assessment of the Heisman Trophy winner.
In addition, according to GM John Dorsey, he, assistant GM Eliot Wolf, and consultant Scot McCloughan all independently came to the conclusion that Mayfield was the best quarterback in the draft.
Even though it seemed like Sam Darnold was the consensus No. 1 quarterback, there is a mounting pile of evidence that a number of teams coveted Mayfield. The Browns will hope those assessments prove correct — they need them to.
