In the first quarter of the second game of the year, Robert Griffin III’s 2014 season came to a halt when he was carted off the field with what would later be diagnosed as a dislocated left ankle.
Optimistic predictions have Griffin back in around eight weeks. Between now and whenever Griffin does return, there will be plenty of analysis about Griffin and the idea of him being the quarterback best suited to lead the Redskins to success.
Long time NFL tight end, and future Hall of Famer, Tony Gonzalez weighed in on Robert Griffin Thursday during an interview with The Junkies on 106.7 The Fan. During the segment, Gonzalez thought seeing a sports psychologist would beneficial to the second pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.
“Once confidence goes in this sport, you will get taken advantage of,” Gonzalez said via CBS Washington. “People are too good around here to have any type of lack of confidence. Let’s hope he gets back from that injury, I’d love for him now, to maybe — that knee gets to heal up even better — get that ankle right. When he does come back, get back in that flow of things.”
“But most importantly, I believe in seeing a sports psychologist as well, because as far as I’m concerned, the way he was looking out there, it was not that old RGIII,” Gonzalez said. “He needs to get back to that guy and feel comfortable in his own skin, where he’s not thinking too much, and just go out there and play.”
It’s been noted by many on more than a few occasions that Robert Griffin hasn’t looked the same as he did during his rookie season, with recovering from the knee injury chief among the proposed reasons.
Gonzalez is right about confidence being crucial, especially at the quarterback position. Griffin may or my not have a lack of it at the moment, but it’s visible to atleast one person that it may be the issue. And that wouldn’t bode well for Griffin or the Washington Redskins.
