Trent Williams opened up about his issues with the Washington Redskins on Thursday, and let’s just say the list is not a short one.
While speaking with the media for the first time this season, Williams said there is “no trust” between him and the team. A lot of that has to do with the fact that he was diagnosed with cancer in the form of a growth that was originally discovered six years ago, and he says team doctors told him issue was nothing major.
Trent Williams tells us he had cancer. DFSP. Growth first started 6 years ago and team diagnosis said it was minor.

Williams had the growth removed during the offseason, and he said the ordeal was frightening for him and his family. He also said he was in the hospital for two weeks and no one from the organization visited him, though it’s interesting that he does not blame Daniel Snyder and still values his friendship with the Redskins owner.

Trent Williams also says he’s grateful for the organization because they’ve given him a lot over the years. Of Dan Snyder specifically, “it wasn’t his fault.”

Williams failed his physical on Wednesday because he said he was experiencing discomfort while wearing his helmet. He attributed that to nerve damage he has on his scalp from where the growth was removed. While he admitted he wanted more guaranteed money on his contract because of the history Washington’s medical staff has with players, he made it seem as though a new contract would not entice him to remain with Washington.
Trent Williams says watching Alex Smith go down last year and “we haven’t had the best history here with medical stuff” made an impact on his desire for more guaranteed money.

Asked if more guaranteed money could fix his relationship with the Redskins, Trent Williams said he’s not “asking them for a dime.”

To put it simply, the relationship between Williams and the Redskins seems tarnished beyond repair. His case is not the first example of a player having issues with the team’s medical staff, but you can understand why he feels the way he does if team doctors downplayed or missed a cancer diagnosis.
Washington infuriated other teams with the way they handled the Williams trade talks leading up to the deadline, and it seems like unloading him during the offseason will be the only option now.
