Twitter hopes Gene Steratore is not the next Mike Carey at CBS
Longtime NFL official Gene Steratore revealed last week that he is retiring after 15 seasons with the league, but fans will still be hearing plenty from him in 2018. They just hope he’s better at his new job than former fellow NFL official Mike Carey was at his.
On Tuesday, CBS announced that Steratore will join the network as a rules analyst for NFL and NCAA basketball coverage. As most of you probably remember, Carey served in the same role until CBS was basically forced to part ways with him in 2016. Twitter hasn’t forgotten what a disaster Carey’s time was with the network.
This experiment will go much better than the Mike Carey Experience. Of that I have little doubt. https://t.co/OpTehJ6U5y

Death, taxes and Mike Carey being wrong.

Hope he assimilates better than Mike Carey, a great ref who never was able to make it work

The good news for Steratore is that Carey set the bar extremely low, at least at CBS. FOX Sports hit a home run when they started the rules analyst movement with Mike Pereira, and other networks have not been able to match them. Carey was often wrong about replay challenges (although CBS disputed that), and his delivery wasn’t great either.
Steratore has plenty of experience with NFL controversies, so he should be able to provide plenty of entertaining insight during broadcasts.
