Powerhouse Bishop Gorman wins after opponent forfeits in 3rd quarter

The Bishop Gorman Gaels, one of the top-ranked High School football programs in the country, picked up an unusual and chaotic win on Friday night.

With under 10:00 remaining in the third quarter and Bishop Gorman leading Lone Peak, 35-14, officials called the game following a skirmish on the sideline.

The incident began with a long Gaels completion and a tackle out of bounds on the Knights’ sideline. A Bishop Gorman player came storming in with an apparent late hit, seemingly to protect his teammate, and then things got out of control.

Pushing and shoving began, with multiple Lone Peak players leaving the bench to engage in the scrum.

Here is the play the drew the infraction. A late hit out of bounds. BUT… it also looks like @BishopGormanFB lured @LPKnightsFB into a fight.

Once calm had been restored, officials huddled at midfield and, after several minutes, handed Bishop Gorman a forfeit victory, per Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) rules.

Whether the Gaels goaded the Knights into a fight or not, the rules call for an automatic forfeit if more than three players leave the bench.

“You cannot have more than three players come off your sideline in the case of a fight. Once you do that, you automatically forfeit the game,” Bishop Gorman head coach Brent Browner said, via the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

“We technically practice that. That sounds crazy, but we have practiced that many times. I was kind of proud of the guys that when it was happening, coaches are taught to turn around and make sure kids don’t move off the sideline, which they didn’t.

The same could not be said for Lone Peak.

“The kids know you can lose a game too if you get throwing punches and things like that, you can lose the game,” Browner added. “Nobody wants to do that. (Knight head coach Bart Brockbank) said it best, they’re teenage kids, and emotions run high. It’s just super unfortunate because this turned into a great game.”

Brockbank didn’t comment after the forfeit, while Bishop Gorman says they will submit film of the incident to NIAA.
