England captain Harry Kane has confirmed he played a round of golf with U.S. President Donald Trump approximately 18 months ago in Palm Beach, Florida. The revelation came during a pre-match press conference in Miami ahead of England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway.
Kane described the experience as “pretty surreal,” noting that the invitation came while he was in the area.
“We played about 18 months ago. He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach. So when the President invites you somewhere,” Kane said, via The Athletic, “It was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him, and to play golf with him.”
The Bayern Munich striker added that he played “alright” and praised Trump’s game.
“His golf is pretty good, to be honest. I hope I can play golf as well as him when I’m his age, that’s for sure,” Kane said. “So, (it was) a unique experience. I’m just grateful he invited me down to play.”
Trump had earlier disclosed the outing to reporters, calling Kane a “great player” and a “good golfer” whom he likes a lot. The comments followed Trump’s Truth Social post lauding Kane’s performance after England’s round-of-16 victory over Mexico.
The encounter highlights an unusual intersection between soccer and politics as England continues its World Cup campaign in the co-host nation.
Kane, who has been in strong form with multiple goals in the tournament, expressed gratitude for the unique opportunity while focusing on the upcoming match.
