Saturday marked a big day for Sloane Stephens and Jozy Altidore.
Stephens won the US Open, giving her her first career major. Her boyfriend, Altidore, scored two goals in Toronto FC’s MLS match against the San Jose Earthquakes.
Altidore was interviewed at halftime of his game and told that Stephens had won the U.S. Open. He told TSN that he was “thrilled” for Stephens.

“I’m thrilled. I’m thrilled for her. She’s worked really hard to work to get back to where she is right now, and I couldn’t be happier,” Altidore said.
Altidore did share that he was informed of the US Open result from his mother.
“My mom told me in the stands, but it’s good for [Sloane]. We’ve been friends for a long time, and to see her progress as she has, it’s a great sight to see.”
According to a New York Times article, Stephens and Altidore have known each other since fifth grade, though they haven’t revealed much publicly about their current relationship. Stephens did recently share what a good influence Altidore’s been on her.
“I don’t think there’s been a more positive person in my corner that I’ve had,” Stephens said of Altidore, via the Times. “When I was on the peg leg, I was with him, and I would always make fun of myself and he’d make fun of me. But he kept it really light for me, so I was never too sad.”
Stephens was referring to her foot injury that kept her out of action early this season. Though he was unable to attend Saturday’s match because of his own event, Altidore did support Stephens at her semifinal match against Venus Williams.
