Rockets GM Daryl Morey: Warriors are an all-time great team

The Golden State Warriors have picked up this season right where they left off: on top of the league.

After winning the NBA championship in June, the Dubs have come out scorching in the ’15-’16 season and are blowing out most of their competition. They have the attention of everyone across the league, and they even have NBA fans wondering what their place may be in history. Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey already has an idea about that.

Morey joined “The Doug Gottlieb Show” on CBS Sports Radio Monday and was asked about the team that knocked his squad out of the playoffs last season. He made it quite clear how highly he thinks about Golden State.

“The Golden State Warriors were not lucky to win the title. They were the best team last year. They are the best team this year so far,” Morey told Gottlieb. “They’re just an unbelievable team. Obviously you can always point to any champion and say ‘maybe this could have gone different or that could have gone different,’ and you can erase every championship.

“This Golden State team is special. I think it’s going to go down as one of the all-time teams. We’re hoping to take them down this year but you gotta look: they beat us nine out of 10. They’ve got our number. We’ve got to figure out how to beat them.”

This is music to Warriors fans’ ears, but Morey’s comments do not come without good reason. The Warriors outpaced the NBA by going 67-15 last season. They swept their first playoff series, beat the Rockets in five, and they were never stretched to a seventh playoff game. They’re off to one of the best starts in franchise history this season as they entered Monday night’s game 7-0. They lead the league in points per game (115.7) and point differential, which at 18.4 is nearly twice the next closest team’s average margin of victory.

The season has only just begun and what a team does in November and October has little bearing on what happens in April-June, but it’s safe to agree with what Morey says: this Warriors team is on track to become one of the greatest teams in NBA history.
