Working the Waiver Wire: Week 4 Free Agent Pickup Advice
MUST-HAVE
Lance Moore, WR, Saints – He’s not going to get easy 80-yard touchdown catches like that again, but he did have 10 touchdowns in 2008 and his six catch, 149 yard day makes him desirable.
BenJarvus Green-Ellis, RB, Patriots – Injuries and a trade have opened this spot up in New England and it looks like the lawfirm will be the beneficiary. The Pats actually run it when they’re up and looking to burn clock, so you can do worse as a starting running back than him.
Paris Lenon, LB, Cardinals – Has averaged nine tackles per game and even picked up a sack and interception against the Raiders. The high tackle totals should continue.
*Make sure they’re not still available: Peyton Hillis, Kyle Orton
Chad Henne, QB, Dolphins – The Pats’ secondary will make adjustments but still is not very good. Henne should have a nice game, but then bench him after that for matchups against GB, PIT, CIN, and BAL.
Packers, Saints, Falcons – All are at home and facing poor offenses. If they’re available, you want them in your lineup for tasty matchups. Especially the Saints – they’ll pick on Jimmy Clausen.
Aaron Hernandez, TE, Patriots – Even though Rob Gronkowski gets a lot of love as a Pats tight end, Hernandez is becoming increasingly more involved in the New England offense
Mark Sanchez, QB, Jets – Has thrown three touchdowns in each of last two games and looked good against Miami. Has four favorable matchups in his next six games.
Brandon Lloyd, WR, Broncos – Ever heard of WR by committee? That’s what they’re doing in Denver. You never know who will get the looks, but two 100-yard games means Lloyd could continue to surprise.
Jabar Gaffney, WR, Broncos – 14 targets on Sunday? Who knows if it will continue, but if it does, you know he’ll put up big numbers.
Matt Bryant, K, Falcons – Atlanta’s always been able to score points, but now they finally have a consistent kicker. Being indoors is always a plus.
*Make sure they’re not still available: Tony Moeaki
Roy Williams, WR, Cowboys – Had an outstanding two touchdown game and was a major factor for Dallas. I wouldn’t expect much more of it.
Matt Cassel, QB, Chiefs – Had a nice three touchdown game, but he wasn’t that good. He did mostly dump offs and connected on a bomb from a flea-flicker. That stuff doesn’t come up frequently enough to make him valuable. Don’t be fooled.
Charlie Batch, QB, Steelers – I know, I really didn’t even have to put this here since you already knew, but just want to make sure you’re alert. Tough assignment against the Ravens then a bye and then Big Ben.
Maurice Morris/Kevin Smith, RB, Lions – Even if Jahvid Best’s turf toe keeps him out, I don’t like either one at Green Bay, or to produce in the future.
Jeremy Shockey, TE, Saints – Caught all eight of his targets, but was only targeted eight times the previous two games. He just doesn’t get enough looks in their spread-it-around offense.
Willis McGahee, RB, Ravens – You don’t want him this week at Pittsburgh, but if Ray Rice’s knee injury is at all serious, he would be a productive starting running back in your lineup. See if you can trade for him now.
John Kuhn, RB, Packers – If you’re really desperate and just need someone who can give you a handful of points, he can be your guy. And he might be able to get you a cheap touchdown too.
Kenny Britt, WR, Titans – Plagued by drops and poor work habits, he emerged as a Vince Young target on a key drive in which he caught a touchdown pass. Maybe he’ll carve out a decent role in the offense moving forward.
Chris Ivory, RB, Saints – Pierre Thomas’ workload will be monitored and Ivory will get some of the carries.
