Santonio Holmes says drawing so many flags is messing with his stats

In a season where most people thought the Jets passing game was going to struggle mightily, Santonio Holmes is off to a pretty solid start. Holmes has racked up 243 yards in three games, having caught nine passes for 147 yards in the Jets most recent win over Miami. He has also contributed to the passing game by drawing a number of penalties, but Holmes says that’s not the way he wants the Jets offense to rack up yardage.

“It’s really messing with my catches, I can honestly say that,” Holmes said. “It’s keeping them down by having the penalties drawn. If we can keep stats on penalties per game, per player, I think those yards would add up. We can add them to our receiving yards … They hurt the receivers’ average and how they play and their performance. When you’re drawing so many penalties, you don’t get opportunities to get any catches.”

ESPNNewYork.com’s Rich Cimini did point out that Holmes was laughing, adding that he also said something about not wanting running backs to steal his touchdowns if a pass interference call in the end zone results in the ball being placed at the 1-yard line.

While Santonio was laughing, I’m sure he wasn’t completely kidding. Based on some of the reported hissy fits he has thrown during practice and the way he has quit on the Jets in the past, we know he can be an extremely selfish player.
