Terry Bradshaw rips Drew Brees: ‘I’m not into records, I’m into winning Super Bowls’

Sunday night was a special night for Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints for a number of reasons. After struggling for four games, New Orleans picked up its first win of the season vs. the San Diego Chargers. While that was the most important part of the evening, the win was slightly overshadowed when Brees broke Johnny Unitas’ 52-year-old record by throwing a touchdown pass in his 48th straight game. That overshadowing was a problem for FOX NFL Sunday’s Terry Bradshaw.

During a recent interview with WFAN’s Evan Roberts and Joe Benigno, Bradshaw ripped Brees for the way he went about breaking the record.

“(The record) didn’t blow me away,” Bradshaw said. “I’m not much on that stuff … I’m not into records, fellas. I’m just into winning football games. (The Saints) hadn’t won a game … I’m not into records, I’m into winning Super Bowls … These things aren’t important. We lose sight of why we play. We play to win and to win championships, not to break records.”

Tough not to agree with Bradshaw on that. While the record was certainly impressive and something to be proud of, it was bizarre that they celebrated it so emphatically with the Saints having been off to such a horrendous start. Bradshaw seemed most annoyed by the fact that Brees asked the NFL for permission to have suspended head coach Sean Payton in attendance.

“I was a little upset that he went to the NFL to get Payton and everybody back to watch him break a record,” Bradshaw said. “I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I never would have gone and asked for them back … I thought it was disrespectful to the San Diego Chargers … So break it, go ahead. Hell, you’re throwing it 50 times a game … I’m just against stuff like that. I just don’t believe in doing stuff like that.”

Obviously, Bradshaw is a bit more old-school than most. Like the time he ripped the NFL earlier this year, I tend to think Terry has a point. During Sunday night’s game I thought it was a bit awkward that the Saints were so happy about something that happened during a season in which they have drastically underacheived. If they were 4-0 or even 2-2, the celebrating would have seemed a bit more appropriate.

Just so everybody knows. The record was for most consecutive games with a TD pass. All of this “he should be tied” or “refs gave him the TD vs the Packers” is just stupidity. He threw 3 TD passes so even if 1 didnt count that makes 2 LEGIT TD passes so therefore he beat Unitas’ record plain and simple. He also won the game. As for asking for Payton to atend the game, all he did was ask and it is not his fault the NFL said yes. So stop hating a man who did nothing but throw TDs. Ohh and Patriots fan here, so i couldnt care less how the Saints are doing.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/2CEUZGDCRATQMEGZJOTIXLK45A linda

Excuse me, I don’t know of any team in NFL history who has EVER just decided not to play the final game of the regular season!!!!!!!!!!  And that includes the Colts. They may not have used their starters, but they did play the game!!!!!!!      Just how stupid do you think we all are?????????

  • Kayoss860

I meant the starters… I should clarify. If the starters would have played they would have possibly go undefeated but to them that was not important therefor the rested their starters and the starters did not play.

  • just4kiks

The only thing about bradshaw is his mouth he had good receivers. just like his super stud horse impressive steeler i personally won numerous contest against him with the impressive TNcookie mare. Terry shut up u were not that great with ur broke ass had to go running mouth so u could stay alive in the world.

  • Kayoss860

Yes agree, Record are meant to be broken but the way he went at it is not sportmanship like. As he bask in the glory of breaking his record his teammates were sitting at 0-4. There’s two teams here, Team Drew Brees and then there are the Saints.

  • Ben2HelenBack

Ignore the troll and it goes away…

  • thefootballlife

If you watched the after game comments by Drew he thanked all his TEAM mates over that span and not taking all the credit! look it up

  • just4kiks

U got to understand the one that i guess ratted them out is the one gone from coaching for life so u do the math dummies. peyton is a great coach and brees is awesome and will brak all records in future so get ready (:

  • thefootballlife

how is a record broken naturally? especially since this was over four years I am pretty sure Drew did not say lets break Unitas record in 2012! if you watched the Saints enough you would know they are a pass first offense then run, just how it is. I am lost by some of these comments!

  • Ben2HelenBack

What was the big celebration?  Brees ran down and hugged his receiver, which is normal for him.  He was handed the ball after the touchdown, waved the ball to the fans coming back to the bench.  The he sat on the bench and looked at defensive formations.  Brees made zero game stopping, extra celebration.  NBC and the NFL pushed this as a huge record breaking event.  Brees was interviewed after the game and gave credit to his teammates and Johnny Unitas.

It is unfortunate Bradshaw has turned into a curmudgeon. He is “old school” and he hates the new NFL especially because the league has become more offensive/passing friendly. Does this take away from Bradshaw’s accomplishments or anyone else’s career or body of work?  His logic that only winners get to celebrate records is naive at best.  Terry’s history is to be the victim.  He was not recruited by the big colleges.  He did not get credit for his Steeler career   He has low self-esteem and had depression which he overcame. However, Bradshaw’s biggest opponent, worst critic and biggest enemy has always been Terry Bradshaw.  The vast majority of “real” football fans know and acknowledge his talent and accomplishments.

In addition, one does not raise oneself higher by lowering the accomplishments of others.  Terry needs to like Terry again.

    Peace…

  • SAMCRO13

Right! You drink the Brees-flavored Kool-Aid, hey I get it. But he’s still a selfish deuche.

  • thefootballlife

Do not even know why I am giving you the time of day but if you can read read this especially the bottom paragraph!!
Drew Brees is the 2009 Super Bowl MVP-winning quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. A native of Austin, TX, Brees attended Westlake High School and lettered in football, basketball, and baseball and as a senior in 1996 led his football team to a perfect 16-0 record and the 5A State Championship while garnering 5A Offensive Player of the Year honors. He attended Purdue University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management from the prestigious Krannert School of Management while lettering in football from 1997-2000. A two-time Heisman finalist, Brees led the Boilermakers to a Big Ten Championship and Rose Bowl appearance during the 2000 season. In that same year he won the Maxwell Award as the nation’s top collegiate player as well as being named Academic All-American Player of the Year and was a recipient of the National Football Foundation’s post-graduate scholarship. In Brees’ five years with the San Diego Chargers and 4 years with the New Orleans Saints, he has been elected to four Pro Bowls while being named 2004 Comeback player of the Year, 2006 All-Pro Team, 2006 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, 2008 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and Super Bowl XLIV Champion and MVP.As much pride as Brees takes in his on field performance, he takes even more pride in his community service endeavors. Drew and his wife, Brittany, established the Brees Dream Foundation in 2003 and since then have contributed and/or committed over $7 million to help advance cancer research, care for cancer patients, and help rebuild schools, parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields in New Orleans, San Diego, and Purdue/West Lafayette, IN communities.Drew currently lives with his wife Brittany and sons Baylen and Bowen in New Orleans

  • Hawker1

Terry was a great quarterback but he took too many head shots.  I’ve seen it happen before, where the nerves in his eyeteeth grow to the muscles in his a-hole, giving him a shiddy outlook on life.  Poor guy.

  • stinkyKuntz

in all my years of growing up in a football family uncle at Alabama, aunt at LSU,another at Tulane all getting together on Sunday for dinner and football ,watching the Pros ,the one thing that comes to mind in those years is I never remember anyone hating so much with so much anger and big loud mouths being squirted no matter what adversities there were in growing up in Footbal news. There was always a story of something this that or the other, but never in my time as a fan have I read so much hatred for one team, with so many underhanded uneducated comments as of the Saints.Maybe Katrina, maybe the Cop stories ,maybe the other things that keep N.O. in the news have driven yall crazy with jeoulousy,As many things that convict the Saints there are things that exonerate and thats not from a fan thats a fact. You people make me ashamed that I even like football, and you aint fans your the Hitler Youth Program and would do better taking a class in some class,Attempts at of hate directed at Brees is just stupid and the people that agree with you seem to be just as ignorant..GEAX SAINTS

  • http://www.facebook.com/connie.richardson.908 Connie Richardson

Now why should Bradshaw shut up?  He stated is opinion.  He didn’t say anything about being a great QB or being a better QB than Brees,  just that he felt winning games and getting to the SB was more important than play showtime for breaking a record.  ESPECIALLY when you can’t lead you team into a win.  Brees should be more worried about winning games than arranging a Broadway Show.  What Bradshaw stated was correct and I am not a fan of Bradshaw but he spoke the truth.

  • http://www.facebook.com/connie.richardson.908 Connie Richardson

Where did Bradshaw say is was so damn great?  Didn’t read that part.  Bradshaw said it right….. Ole’ Drew needs to focus more on winning games and getting his team to a SB than staging a major show for the world to see.

  • TimMcDonald

The person who disrespects what Bradshaw has done might as well disrespect Joe Montana too.  He wouldn’t have been anything special without Rice and Taylor, right? Or so you seem to suggest.    Stallworth > Swann btw.

  • TimMcDonald

“worst qb to win 4 superbowls”?   Do you even realize how stupid that sounds?

  • TimMcDonald

He’s very jealous of Ben’s big salary, that has been plain to see all along.   And when Ben didn’t kiss his butt, he talked dismissively about him.   Big Ben will never equal Terry in Rings, but he will probably equal him in SB appearances.

  • stinkyKuntz

you restate the obvious ,if you aint got nothing new dont say it ,you ever watch a Brees interview he has always maintained humble view and has never given credit to himself he is as gracious a loser as winner, and always respects his team above all else ,I cant understand the arguement about the record Brees didnt set this party up on Sunday, the Saints didn’t plan a game stopping blow out ,the person that decided to praise the passing of this particular torch is the person you need to take your anger to .Go beat your wives go beat your kids go beat yalls dogs but hammmering on the Brees is a futile show of foolish, to people who are truly fans of the game

  • stinkyKuntz

and besides brady is just a whinning pampered pretty boy who during the game is eager to throw the blame on anybody else except himself,he may be hardworking but cant hold a candle to a genuine class act like Brees, like drdn said it wasn’t long ago bradshaw was eager to be the first to sing the praises of Brees, time and time again Bradshaw was first to fall on bended knee behind Brees just get a whiff of his butthole now by popular demand he pulled a Judas ,a hypocrite, well no surprise as far as I’m concerned and his actions hurt himself more than it was to hurt Brees, give it rest step back and take a rest and find someone else to hate cause Mr. Breese rep is cast ib stone and no one can crack it

  • stinkyKuntz

after all is said and done . Bradshaw was eager to fall to bended knee just to get a whiff of Drews butthole not long ago.And time after time he would be first to sing the praises of Brees,But now he has decided to pull a Judas,a hypocrite under pressure by popular demand and makes me laugh to see him bend and ultimatly break in front of the whole world just by a little Brees blowing past his majesty.OOO how the mighty have fallen to be caught in midstream changing your mind like a high school girl.It comes as no suprise to me and makes me feel great to know that Drew Breeses reputation and achievments are cast in stone and the girly swings of bradshaws hammer cant crack it

  • stinkyKuntz

heres something for all yall to remember. If you ever see Brees being asked in public what he thought of bradshaws remark ,I can promise you this he will handle himself with pride and dignity at the same time and without a doubt credit bradshaw for having a right to his opinion and wheather or not he agrees with him is beside the point.Class thats all you’ll ever get from Mr. Brees ,he is truly a talented individual in all respects and can do no wrong so far, in my book of statistics.

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.cook.7334 Barbara Cook

What in the world are you talking about? Did you even watch the game or are you just trolling with the dissenting opinion (cause it sure sounds like you don’t know football)?  What way did he go at breaking the record that is so offensive?  Because he wanted his coaches there since, in his words, the reord is as much about his team and his coachs and NOT an individual record (guess you didn’t hear that)? He only needed one touchdown pass to break the record and knowing Drew, he usually throws 2 or 3 touchdowns a game (4 on Sunday Night!). So of course everyone knew he would likely break the record.  What “basking in glory” did you witness him doing? NONE.  Please stop embarrasing yourself as there is no way you know anything about the Drew Brees or the Saints, and I’m doubtful you know much about football!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.cook.7334 Barbara Cook

Tied with Unitas, why?  He is not tied with Unitas. Drew Brees has thrown at least 1 touchdown pass in 48 consecutive games (more than 3 seasons).  That is an NFL record.  There is/was no unfair advantage.  Either you throw a touchdown each game or you don’t.  PERIOD.

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.cook.7334 Barbara Cook

You do know you sound ridiculous right?  Brees is one of the least selfish players in the NFL, period.  He has been waiting for years for the Saints to pay him what he is worth and they finally have.  Stop hating!  He is already on the level of Brady and Manning and everyone knows it (so shove it), LOL!

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.cook.7334 Barbara Cook

He doesn’t decide that he can “stay tied”…how old are you, 3?

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.cook.7334 Barbara Cook

Please, do us all a favor and grow up or SHUT UP. Where is the “no idiots allowed” sign when you need it?

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.cook.7334 Barbara Cook

No you don’t have respect for other playersso stop lying!  Drew Brees has thrown a touchdown pass in 48 consecutive games, which is more than three seasons of football.  Some QBs can’t throw a touchdown pass in 5 consecutive games!  You don’t have to like the Saints or even Drew (but u have to be some kind of sad-sack grinch not to like Brees), but you have to respect that kind of incredible record and talent spanning many seasons.  It’s not something you can set out to break, it either happens or it doesn’t.  He didn’t overly celebrate, he did what he always does – hugs his WR and ran back to the sideline to look at defensive pics.  The fans celebrated, the media celebrated, and he asked for his coaches to be there because he feels it’s as much their accomplishment  (and his team’s) as his.  How people can be mad at that is waaay beyond my understanding, but then again I don’t do HATERade.

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.cook.7334 Barbara Cook

WHAT broadway show?  What the heck are you people talking about? He asked for his coaches to be there because he had faith he would likely throw a TD, and he believes it is the entire team’s record (not just his) so he asked for them to be there.  That is a broadway show????  You are hating, and you need to flick your lighter and just admit it.  There was no show, there was no abundance of celebration, the game didn’t stop.  The announcer told the fans about the record but that would happen in ANY home stadium.  So what in the world are you talking about?  Do you even know?  And by the way, Drew DID win the game.  Check the 4 TDs, sweetie!

  • http://twitter.com/i_thompson14 Ian Thompson

Right, and ripping “so called sports fans” (because, somehow, if people don’t share your views then, they’re not fans?) and “idiots” on the internet is contributing to the good of the world (or following the golden rule) how?

  • http://www.facebook.com/barbara.cook.7334 Barbara Cook

They celebrated like they won a Super Bowl?  I must have missed that part, when did that happen?  All I remember is Drew hugging Henderson (which he always does after a TD), being tossed the ball, and holding it up to fans as he went back to the sidelines to study pictures.  They didn’t even throw in an extra commercial for this so-called “celebration” mirage you thought you saw.  By the way, they have won a Super Bowl…

  • http://twitter.com/TONYT203 TONYT203

Stop your bitchin’. The Saints were warned to stop the program. But, because of the arrogance of Sean Peyton more than anything else. They’re didn’t. If Goodell is so wrong, then why is the main man not fighting. Every one of the players are bitchin’ and complainig. But. not Payton. Not Vitt. Not Loomis. What does that tell you? The rest of you, stop your bitchin’ and take your punishment like a man. Outside of New Orleans, no one believes anything you say anyway. And no one gives a f**k.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/LIWMNKNSRGA6FP5IF3PR7ZOHNY JK

Bradshaw won the Super Bowl 4 damn times! He is exactly right. That’s what’s wrong with these punk-ass me first athletes today. It’s never about TEAM, but always about ME!

  • Patrick Michael

Why shouldn’t Brees be happy and excited about this?  Their team needs this sort of thing to help right their floundering team.  I am a HUGE fan of Bradshaw, but give the guy a break, give him his moment.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/O4OPYVD4ZY653CFRXWVHDQCM5Y john

Amen sister!!! And why would lying about being tied with the old record make ANYONE a class act???????

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/O4OPYVD4ZY653CFRXWVHDQCM5Y john

He was not GIVEN anything. He went out on the field and played and earned every thing you think was GIVEN to him!!!!!!!!!!  Oh, excuse me, I did say you THINK he was given. I was mistaken, you DIDN,T think before you spoke!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/AJRA4ZOAK6Q2OB6SIXTFAOKFI4 Robert

Rage much? This isn’t about the Bounty Scandel, it is about “Terry Bradshaw rips Drew Brees: ‘I’m not into records, I’m into winning Super Bowls’”

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/JJK24SDQJJTS36C4MO3K4OJYM4 John j.

It’s obvious why Bradshaw objests to the way Brees celebrated breaking a record that was 50 years old.  Because he never did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/JJK24SDQJJTS36C4MO3K4OJYM4 John j.

It’s quite obvious why Bradshaw took offence to Brees breaking a 50 year old record.  He never did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • M.L. Washington

Okay–I have got to inject myself in here.  First of all, his name is Brees (no apostrophe required; as it only indicates possessiveness and he’s a QB–not a receiver.)  Secondly, “The Katrina Bowl”? Only an internet gangsta would even consider typing these words because if you ever had the chance to visit N.O. and utter those words in a whisper-tone, you’d be reamed out like the little punk that you are! Thirdly, I’ve read your ignorant comments about being classy and “staying tied” with Unitas; which is totally clueless of you because Drew Brees is accustomed to winning and won’t hold back on breaking a record in order to make you or other spoiled sports feel better about yourselves and your heroes.  Terry Bradshaw is so over the line on this–he, of all people, should know about Saints fans and how the people of Louisiana feel about their team.  Hell–It’s N.O.  People there celebrate for no reason at all–7 days a week! So, in the midst of a slow starting season and the after effects of Bounty-gate, if something worth celebrating happens, then live it up!  On top of that, Drew Brees is the next best thing to Mardi Gras in N.O. and Louisiana!  Not only is he an outstanding QB, he is a great guy off the field.  I don’t care what anyone says about “classy” or not; when you earn an achievement–you celebrate it because you have every right to. In N.O., we have learned the importance of living in the moment because tomorrow isn’t promised and life can turn on a dime. So, to all the haters who think it was in poor taste to acknowledge or celbrate the breaking of Unitas’s record–weep quietly while the band plays and the Saints go marching in.  And as for the Katrina Bowl commenter… I’d love to see you say that in the face of ANY Saints fan. It’s obvious to me that you don’t know any personally.  Because if you did; you wouldn’t have fingers to type with.  Learn to spell, capitalize proper names and use grammar–you jerkoff!

I think we fail to understand that when somebody’s record is fixing to be broken, the media tells us about it. I didn’t know about this record Unitas had. Terry Bradshaw…Come On Man…If this thing hadn’t been played up in all the media, who then cares? It is a fan grabber. It makes the game. It makes people buy tickets. I’m an old Louisiana Tech guy too buddy. You know the importance of fans in the seats. It was tough to fill Aillet Stadium wasn’t it? I don’t know if I ever saw it full. I was at La Tech right after you left. Tech  played 46 games and won 42 of them when I was there.  Brees broke a record. Tiger Woods might break Jack’s record in the future. You think the media and fans all over the world won’t tune in? Everybody knows about Jack’s record. I didn’t know about Unitas’ record. But I watched him play way back when. Brees is a class act and has a huge love for the game and not just his fans, but all football fans. You think he starts a season looking at record books? I doubt it. He starts the season trying to figure out how to win that next ring. Will you get ticked off if he wins 4 Super Bowls and then a 5th Superbowl? It’s called success. You can see it in his eyes from the TV screen in my living room. Drew Brees is out there thinking not just performing. I’m not taking sides, I just call it the way I see it. I’m from Louisiana too buddy. Brees is a class act that moved to Louisiana and calls it home. We all love football. Records get broken and this makes the game interesting, whatever the game is.

  • M.L. Washington

Connie, what is the record for again?  TDs, right?  How does a QB help his team win?  TDs, right?  Okay–I thought so.  What is the beef here?  Oh–I remember… haters.  Major show?  This is the NFL, people!  It’s THE major show every time you suit up! Only 2 teams make it to the Super Bowl.  Every game counts.  If you break a record in one or two of ‘em… great!  But the fat lady is on hiatus for a few months now, so everyone needs to relax and cheer for their team and quit hating on QBs doing great with one win or none. Geesh.  Where’d the civility go?

  • M.L. Washington

I’d love to share my season tickets with you!  WHO DAT!
