George Lopez offers to buy San Fernando High School’s rings if they win LA city championship

George LopezGeorge Lopez is adding some incentive for his alma mater. The comedian told members of San Fernando (Calif.) High School’s baseball team after their playoff game on Wednesday that he would buy their championship rings if they win the city championship.

Lopez, a San Fernando native who briefly played for the school’s baseball team, attended the school’s LA City Division I semifinal playoff game against Banning (Wilmington, Calif.) High School at USC’s Dedeaux Field on Wednesday. San Fernando won the game 8-4 to advance to the city championship game on Saturday against Cleveland (Reseda, Calif.) High School at Dodger Stadium.

Alex Ubeda of Inside the Diamond attended the game and tells LBS that Lopez joined the team in the dugout after the win, took photos with the players, and promised he would buy them their rings if they bring home the championship.

“Let’s keep the tradition going, you win on Saturday, you already know,” Lopez told the players, per Ubeda. “Let’s get them rings.”

The tradition to which he was referring came two years ago when San Fernando beat national powerhouse Chatsworth 8-6 in the city finals to win their second city championship in school history. Lopez also bought the team their rings in 2011. Those rings cost $400 each and the kids wouldn’t have been able to afford them otherwise.

Lopez is easily the team’s most well-known fan (and el mas chingon). He even played in the school’s alumni game in February, so you can bet he’ll be there on Saturday.

Here’s a look at Lopez at the game:
