Adrien Broner: I’m the closest thing to Floyd Mayweather

Adrien Broner Floyd Mayweather mini me

Is there anyone who thinks more highly of Adrien Broner than Adrien Broner? Probably not.

Broner is close friends with Floyd Mayweather and considers the undefeated boxer his mentor and brother. The feelings seem to be mutual based on what Floyd has said in the past, but Broner took things a little too far in some comments he made over the weekend.

Appearing on Showtime’s set for the Lamont Peterson-Dierry Jean fight last Saturday, Broner proudly exclaimed that he is the closest thing to Floyd Mayweather. His comments rubbed boxing fans in completely the wrong way, mostly because Floyd is undefeated while Broner already has one loss, which puts them worlds apart in terms of achievement.

But what exactly did Broner mean by “closest thing to Mayweather”?

If by his comments Broner meant close in terms of friendship, he might be right. Or if he meant that he’s the closest thing to Mayweather in terms of the way he’s made himself a controversial figure in the sport, I could buy that. But the way Broner said it, it seemed like he was talking about the total package, which would include skill, ability, marketing, fame, etc. And after losing to Marcos Maidana, Broner does not belong in the same boxing conversation as Floyd.

Mayweather has never been owned in a fight the way Broner was. Never.

Adrien Broner, Marcos Maidana will rematch; fight likely for April

Adrien Broner gold grill

Just on Wednesday Adrien Broner was tweeting about his desire to fight Marcos Maidana again after suffering his only career loss to the Argentine last month. Well it sounds like he will get his wish.

According to ESPN boxing reporter Dan Rafael, Broner has picked up his option for a rematch with Maidana. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told Rafael the rematch is likely to happen in April and air on Showtime.

Schaefer says the fight will likely take place on April 19 or 26 at either the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., or the Alamadome in San Antonio, which was the site of the December fight between the men.

Maidana, who is 35-3 with 31 KOs in his career, dropped Broner twice in their fight and won by unanimous decision.

One other note about this rematch taking place in April is that likely means Floyd Mayweather will end up facing Amir Khan in May. Because of his big win over Broner and overall knockout power, Maidana was considered a candidate to face Floyd, but this takes him out of the running.

We like Maidana to win the rematch as well.

Adrien Broner only wants to fight Marcos Maidana next

Adrien Broner meme

Adrien Broner was totally embarrassed in his loss to Marcos Maidana last month, but at least he’s taking the right attitude going forward.

Broner was knocked down twice in the fight and lost by unanimous decision for his first career defeat. Now 27-1, Broner says the only fight he wants next is a rematch with Maidana. Check out the tweets he sent on Wednesday:

Maidana indicated after the fight that he would be open to a rematch, so it’s quite possible that we see one. But will Broner make good on his word? Will the rematch work out differently? I have my doubts. Broner looked grossly outclassed by Maidana in that fight.

Roger Mayweather on Adrien Broner: ‘He ain’t no motherf—ing Floyd Mayweather’ (Video)

Roger-MayweatherAdrien Broner openly admits he is trying to model himself after Floyd Mayweather Jr. Like Floyd, Broner tries to be flashy and talks as much trash as possible so people are aware of him and will pay to watch him fight. As we saw from Broner’s loss over the weekend during which he humped Marcos Maidana and gave us a flop for the ages, he is far from being anywhere close to the fighter Mayweather is.

Roger Mayweather, Floyd’s uncle and one of his trainers, made it clear that he is certain Broner will never be Floyd when he was recently asked about the Broner-Maidana fight. Roger’s rant was pretty entertaining, but beware that it contains a lot of salty language.

In Roger’s opinion, people don’t hate on Broner because he talked about stealing someone’s girlfriend or leaked a disgusting sex tape of himself – they hate on him because he can’t live up to the hype.

“The motherf—er wasn’t what he was anyway,” Roger said. “He wasn’t what people thought he was. They thought he was the next Floyd Mayweather. Now he got his ass whooped and people are saying, ‘This motherf—er wasn’t no Floyd.’ Hell no goddamn way he is.”

If you asked Floyd about Broner, he would probably have a lot nicer things to say about him than his uncle did. Broner looks up to Floyd as a brother and mentor and Floyd tweeted support of Broner after he lost to Maidana by unanimous decision. Still, Roger is right. Broner is not and probably never will be Floyd.

Adrien Broner flops after headbutt from Marcos Maidana (Video)

From humping his opponent in the ring to getting knocked down twice and losing, Adrien Broner had many embarrassing moments in his unanimous decision defeat to Marcos Maidana on Saturday.

One moment that cannot be overlooked is how he flopped after being headbutt by Maidana in the eighth round.

Maidana recorded his second knockdown of the fight in the eighth, and Broner was so desperate to gain any edge possible that he totally faked being hurt after Maidana raised his head into his chin. I mean just look at Broner’s pathetic delayed reaction. He got hit, realized he had a chance to gain a point, and went down about a second or two later. What an acting job.

Maidana’s headbutt wasn’t the traditional head-to-head type of headbutt, but he still was penalized a point because of Broner’s act.

Luckily for Maidana, losing the point did not affect the outcome of the fight as he won easily on all three judges’ cards. But you can definitely add this to the list of embarrassing moments that Broner will have to work awfully hard to overcome. He really lost a lot of respect among fans for his poor showing.

Adrien Broner memes come strong after loss to Marcos Maidana

If you were ever curious how the internet might look if Floyd Mayweather Jr. actually lost a fight, this is a small taste.

Adrien Broner is nowhere near as well known as Mayweather, but he has a huge following. He is hated as much as Mayweather because of his flashy ways, which is actually a good thing; people pay to see the villain because they want to watch him lose.

Unlike Floyd, though, Broner actually lost, which gave the people what they wanted. And the internet loved it and capitalized.

Shortly after his loss to Maidana, the internet was flooded with Broner memes using pictures of his knockdown or how dazed he looked clearing out of the ring after the decision. First are the memes using the pictures of his knockdown.

Here he is doing the Michael Jackson Thriller dance:

Floyd Mayweather tweets support of Adrien Broner after loss

Adrien Broner Floyd Mayweather

Many were wondering how Floyd Mayweather would react to seeing his protege Adrien Broner lose his first career fight. The answer is he hasn’t wavered in his support of the youngster from Cincinnati.

Not long after Broner lost his WBA welterweight title to Marcos Madiana via unanimous decision, Mayweather sent a tweet to Broner:

“hold your head up champ. I love you. A true champion can take a loss and bounce back, my lil brother,” Mayweather wrote. He also included the picture seen at the top.

Broner’s loss to Maidana was his first and therefore significant for a number of reasons. As we said before the fight, Broner considered Mayweather his mentor. He explicitly stated that he trying to become the next Floyd Mayweather Jr. But the big difference between the two is that Floyd has a perfect record while Broner already has a loss. He’ll never be able to be Floyd for that reason alone.

Many fans turned on Broner after the Maidana fight because he behaves like a clown and wasn’t able to back it up. Mayweather talks himself up a bunch, but he hasn’t lost a fight yet. Broner has. Broner had a lot of work to do to repair his image, but at least he still has Floyd on his side. Floyd’s support will likely help him get the fans back.
