Browns’ Twitter account seems sick of Brandon Weeden interceptions

brandon-weeden-brownsCleveland Browns fans probably did not feel confident heading into Sunday’s game with Brandon Weeden as their starting quarterback, though they were facing the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the lowly opponent, Weeden and company found a way to lose the game.

To the Jags’ credit, they have now won three out of four games and have clearly improved since the start of the season. However, they benefitted from three turnovers from Weeden, who was intercepted twice and lost a fumble. After Weeden threw his second pick, it appeared even the Browns’ official Twitter account had seen enough.

Ouch. Typically a team’s Twitter account focuses on calling positive attention to the team. It’s one thing to say that Weeden threw an interception, but the “and again” was clearly thrown in there to make him look bad.

Weeden has now thrown nine touchdowns and nine interceptions in the eight games in which he has played a significant amount of snaps. The Browns are 1-6 in those games. He clearly is not the quarterback of the future.

Brandon Weeden throws incredibly dumb interception (GIF)

Brandon Weeden interceptionBrandon Weeden threw an incredibly dumb interception on Sunday to help ensure the Cleveland Browns lost to the Detroit Lions.

The Browns were down 24-17 with under five minutes left in the fourth quarter and had the ball in Detroit territory. Weeden was under pressure, but instead of just taking a sack or throwing the ball away, he inexplicably tried to do a backhand shovel pass about 15 yards to one of his receivers. Shockingly, it was intercepted to help ice the game for Detroit. Keep in mind that came on 1st and 10, not fourth down where that was their last chance or something. He didn’t have to make that play. He chose to.

Broncos were reportedly prepared to draft Brandon Weeden

When the Denver Broncos chose to go with Peyton Manning as their quarterback of the near future over Tim Tebow, very few questioned their decision. While Tebow had just led Denver on an improbable run to the divisional round of the playoffs, Manning is a future Hall of Famer who has already won a Super Bowl. Opportunities like that don’t come around all that often for a franchise, so the Broncos had to strike.

But would they have stuck with Tebow even if they missed out on Manning? According to Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post, the Broncos were prepared to draft Brandon Weeden if Manning chose not to sign with Denver. From the Post:

The Broncos liked Weeden’s NFL-ready game. They like his maturity; he was, after a stint in minor league baseball before he arrived at Oklahoma State, 28 years old before the draft. And they liked his ability to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage.

Elway particularly liked the fact Weeden already understood what it took to be a professional athlete and thought that would serve Weeden well in the inevitable struggles that come on the job.

The Broncos traded Tebow two days after signing Manning, so many will argue that Tebow was simply a victim of circumstance. However, you don’t draft a 28-year-old rookie with the intention of letting him hold a clipboard for a few years and develop into an NFL starter. Like the Cleveland Browns, it’s safe to say Denver intended to use Weeden right away if they drafted him. In hindsight, it sounds as though John Elway and the Broncos may have felt the same way about Tebow as the Jets do now.

Brandon Weeden upset with media over receiver route comments

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden was upset with some writers/media outlets for indicating that he had called out his coaches during the week.

Weededn made some high throws during overtime of last weekend’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys. This week he reportedly lamented that the team ran some routes in the extra period that they hadn’t run during the week.

“There’s a couple of routes we ran on Sunday for the first time all week and that’s not fair to me, it’s not fair to the receivers, it’s not fair to any of us, because when you’re getting thrown in the fire and the bullets are flying …” Weeden said, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer before trailing off.

Head coach Pat Shurmur disagreed with Weeden.

“I disagree with some of that because I do think that we make an effort of the ones we’re going to call we practice. A lot of the plays that we practice, we’ve been running all year and you run them in training camp. It’s nearly impossible with the amount of time and then the length of the season to practice every single thing multiple times.”

Weeden acknowledged that it’s nearly impossible to run all the routes during a practice week because they need to keep their players fresh. His comments were picked up by Pro Football Talk, which caused a string of reactions.

Brandon Weeden attempts two passes on same play

Brandon Weeden had a touchdown pass taken away on Sunday against the Giants because his throw came on an illegal pass.

The Browns rookie quarterback had a 3rd down pass from the five batted at the line of scrimmage. Weeden caught the ball after it deflected back to him, and he continued looking to make a play. He eventually found Jordan Cameron in the end zone for a touchdown.

Unsurprisingly, the TD was nullified by an illegal forward pass penalty that set the Browns back five yards. Weeden was intercepted on the next play, and the Browns went on to lose 41-27. I guess we should give credit to Weeden for a “nice try.” That may have flied with the replacement refs, but not with the real ones.

Brandon Weeden’s Wife Melanie Takes in the Fiesta Bowl (Pictures)

Brandon Weeden isn’t your typical college quarterback. He’s 28 years old and playing college football after a failed professional baseball career. At 28, Weeden is actually older than eight of the quarterbacks who will be starting in the NFL playoffs. He’s also a married man, and his wife Melanie was in attendance for the Fiesta Bowl to cheer on her hubby.

The reaction you see above came when Weeden scored his first career rushing touchdown. It’s something Cowboys fans have never seen, so that explains the surprised look on Melanie’s face. Here are a few more pics:
