Jerry Jones spent a good part of the season taking public potshots at Brandon Weeden. Now, Weeden gets the last laugh.
Weeden, filling in for injured quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and T.J. Yates, threw for two touchdowns and 200 yards on Sunday against the Titans, putting the Houston Texans on the brink of a playoff berth. Weeden started the season in Dallas and, when Tony Romo was injured, got a chance to play, going 0-3 in a heavily dumbed-down offense before being benched for Matt Cassel and eventually released.
In an appearance on 107.7 The Franchise on Monday, Weeden couldn’t help himself when asked if it would be extra satisfying to head to the playoffs while the Cowboys, and specifically the ever-critical Jones, watched from home.
“I mean yeah, absolutely,” Weeden admitted. “That’d be sweet. We get to play extra football and he’ll be watching on his couch.”
It’s hard to blame Weeden for being a bit happy about all this. After initially hyping him up, Jones threw Weeden under the bus pretty much immediately, his criticism becoming more and more blunt after each loss, despite the offense being intentionally limited to try to protect Weeden. Things culminated immediately after Weeden’s release when Jones outright said that Cassel would have won the games Weeden didn’t. Now, not only is Weeden headed to the playoffs, but he’s actually played a role on the team while Jones’s Cowboys limp toward the finish line.
